TEXT: University Physics Hugh Young 13th / 14th Edition (This is a textbook transition year; I'll clarify at our first lecture.)

IN GENERAL: Lectures will be a mixture of theory and problem-solving. I will give two mildly graded quizzes before the Midterm and a third before the drop-date at the end of the 14th week of class. It will be up to you to decide, given the results of these tests, whether you wish to attempt to complete the course.

GRADING: As this course is designed to partially prepare the student for upper division studies, the grading is similar to those studies. Very simply, your course grade depends on six assessments: three 5-point/5 multiple-choice question quizzes, a 30-point Midterm (10 multiple choice questions, 3 points each), a 30-point Final (also 10 multiple choice questions, 3 points each), plus 25 points for your lab work. Tests will not be open book/open notes, but you may bring 1 page of notes (I will provide constants and integral tables). The quizzes and tests will be given at only the specified dates and times (See your Lab Manual page and the CCPhysics Finals page) and no make-ups will ever be permitted*. Click here to find out why. During tests and quizzes, once the first student leaves the room no further students will be admitted.

My letter grades and percentage breakdown are as follows:

I figure cumulatively at the end of the semester, so don't go by individual letter grades. Since my grade partitioning is already wide, I don't further curve: I go strictly by the numbers, integer function. Hence, if your final average is 74.999999 it means still means a C--no last minute bargaining. Individual questions about grades, including your responses on a test, are addressed only during office hours.

HOMEWORK: The text provides many, many problems for practice, and practice is the only way to succeed on the assessments. I don't collect homework; the provided list is for the purpose of acquiring proficiency, and it is up to you to determine how much practice you need. (hint: you may even find textbook problems on tests!)

ATTENDANCE: I give no credit for seat-warming. Roll will be taken at the beginning of class. If a student misses more than four (4) classes, meaning his/her name is not on four (4) roll sheets, I have grounds to drop the student, and I will.

LABS: This is the remaining 25% of your grade. Lab reports will be turned in ON TIME and in good order. It will be to your advantage to get a clear idea of the experiment BEFORE you enter the lab. The manual is on-line on the lab computers or available for download. There will be a short lecture every lab, so be sure to bring your notebook. VERY IMPORTANT! Read the section in the manual on writing a lab report! Failure to comply with these guidelines will significantly affect your grade.

With few exceptions only two students are allowed per lab setup; this is because with three students one invariably stands around while the other do the work. Therefore during the first lab session you will choose a lab partner. Choose well! You will have 5-10 minutes to interview your potential partner. If he/she drops, you may join another group until another free agent occurs, or join with one left over from beginning. You may switch partners if you find your initial choice was less than optimum.

I expect one report from each group, with both names noted. This will be the grade for both, including late penalties. Warning! Thereís always someone who will try to duck doing his fair share. Divide the labor!

COMPUTERS: We use Windows laptops with Microsoft Office 2007 in our labs. You should each invest in at least one USB flash-drive to backup your files. I cannot magically reclaim your data if the program crashes and you don't have some removable storage, or if your lab partner drops the course and takes the last labís data with him.

Academic Honesty: Anyone caught cheating on a test or lab will receive an F for the course (please review the section in your catalog dealing with academic honesty). No amount of pleading or apologizing will change this action. Even first time cheaters will fail the course. Don't even consider anything that may resemble cheating. I'll find out about it and you will fail the course. Your decision to defraud will have the most dire academic consequences!

*After you take the lab test during the last lab session, you may take a replacement quiz ONLY IF you have missed a quiz, not the Midterm. It will not be the quiz you missed but a different set of questions appropriate for the end of the semester.
